Simple make-up Tips to Maximize Features

I have received so many requests to teach some simple minimizing and maximizing tricks that here we go!  The first extremely common complaint I hear is my eyelids bulge out and are puffy; I can’t wear eyeshadow.  If this is you, stay away from light, shimmery shades of eyeshadow.  Instead, apply an eyeshadow in a medium deep neutral from above the lashes to just above the crease.  This will minimize the puffy, bulging appearance of the lid and draw it back.  A great neutral for this is Portobello.  Another common complaint is I have darkness above and below my eyes all the time and nothing covers it.  For dark lids above and below, start with a cream concealer/primer on the top lid and bring it around to the corner of the nose and teardrop area on the underside.  I recommend our pot concealer for this.  Next, after cleansing and moisturizing face, apply a Liquid Powder Mineral foundation in your appropriate shade and bring it up to just underneath the bottom lid of the eye.  This foundation will set into a powdery finish that will not move around; and when used in conjunction with the concealer, it will blot out any problem darkness you are experiencing.  And lastly, while on eyelids, is the common complaint of my lids are droopy, and I can’t see my eyelid anymore.  I can’t wear eye make-up.  If very little of your top lid shows, make sure you apply eye make-up that is not going to move around when your lid is rubbing.  First apply a liquid eyeshadow on upper lid too above the crease of the eye.  Next, lightly dust a complementary shade of powder shadow over the lid.  Line eyes, upper and lower, with either a waterproof gel eyeliner in a pot or an Ultimate eyeliner in a pencil.  Finish with waterproof mascara.

Switching over to facial features, any feature that you perceive to be too long or too prominent can be minimized with a foundation stick or mineral concealer  one shade deeper than your skin tone; apply the foundation stick to, for example, the tip of your nose if you believe it is too long, along your forehead if you think it is too prominent, or along your chin line if you think it is too much for your face.  Blend the line out gently into your skin and apply a foundation all over face in your natural skin tone.  Any feature that you believe is not prominent enough can be maximized in just the opposite way; by applying make-up that is lighter than your skin tone to that area and then applying your foundation.  The same applies to lips.  Small lips look larger when lighter, shimmery lipsticks and glosses are applied to them.  Small eyes pop with light, shimmery pastels and colored eyeliners.  Nonexistent cheekbones appear when a deeper foundation stick is applied underneath, and a lighter, shimmery bronzer or blush is applied on the cheekbone itself.

A bit of practice will go a long way with these techniques, and good lighting in your application area is definitely a plus!

Hope in a Jar – How Much Can Skin Care Products Do For you; Expectations and Facts

Wednesday, October 21st, 2015

hopeinajarphoto

So perhaps years of being in the sun, squinting without sunglasses, imbibing on a bit too
much alcohol or not drinking enough water have begun to catch up to you and have bitten
you on the butt, so to speak?? Or maybe it’s genetics or the way you crinkle your face
on the pillow or lines around the mouth from smoking or drinking from water bottles (which
is basically the same motion as smoking)?? What about medications that have left behind
blotchy marks on the skin, whether chemo or birth control or antibiotics?? Yes, unfortunately,
all of these culprits take their toll on your skin over time leaving behind their telltale
souvenirs of sagginess, sun spots, wrinkles and fine lines, dryness, redness, blotchiness
and uneven skin tone along with a loss of essential collagen, elastin and hyaluronic.
And, yes, chronological age itself will factor into this equation. The question I always
get is what can I do at this point and how much improvement will I see. Hopefully this blog
will help you sort out some of the misconceptions as well as provide you with facts and
tips on how to care for your skin from this point forward to protect your skin, prevent
further damage and heal some of the past damage while making your skin appear healthier
and younger looking.

The first line of defense in this war is to replace as much as you can of what has been lost
to plump and firm skin, add moisture and even out tone. This can be achieved with hyaluronic,
Collagen and Elastin, DMAE, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Peptides, antioxidants and botanicals, which
include vitamins. Layering serums with a cream or gel on top will give you double duty on
sealing ingredients into the skin as well as adding the extra boost of ingredients from both
products. You can only include so many ingredients in some products because of stabilization.
In this blog I am only hitting on actual skin improvement and care products versus quick fix
or cosmetic products.

Also, keep in mind that for deep lines and crevices, such as nasolabial folds and deep brow
furrows, no amount of skin care can correct these very deep lines and muscular sagging. This also
applies to sagging chin lines, as well as under chin fat pockets and heavy neck sagging. “Chicken
Skin Neck” where the texture is rough, patchy and dry looking, can be corrected a great deal with
neck cream, which improves the texture of surface skin. Even with deep wrinkles or sagging, the general
appearance, the texture and the evenness of tone can be greatly improved with proper skin care. Firmness
can also be increased.

Eyelids are particularly vulnerable to environmental exposure, since the skin on your eyelids is some of
the thinnest on your whole body, along with the skin on the top of your hands. Be sure to use appropriate
serums and creams around entire eye area morning and evening. Tap on lightly with fingertips or use a light circular motion with fingertips, called effleurage, to increase absorption. Do not get any products in eyes.

No matter what stage your skin is in, it is never too late to begin a skin care regimen.
For dark spots and uneven skin tone my recommendation is peptides such as those contained in our
Peptide Radiance Serum, Peptox Wrinkle Relaxing Creme and Rejuvenating Creme.
For dullness and dry patches exfoliate with either our Almond Skin Polisher or Vitamin C Peel.
For “chicken neck skin” use our Neck Cream to help improve texture and firmness.
For eyelids I would recommend our Firming Eye Serum with our Tone Up Firm Up Eye Cream on Top.
For dryness and all over sun damage use our Firm, Protect and Repair Cream or Collagen Cream.
To enhance the effectiveness, try our Hyaluronic Serum, Swiss Apple Stem Cell Serum or DMAE Firming Fluid underneath.
For Rosacea and broken capillaries use our Redness Calming Serum, which is a holistic serum with a licorice root base that will not irritate or dry sensitive skin.
We have dozens of additional skin care products for your individual concerns, problems and demons.

Exfoliation is the Key to Healthy, Glowing Skin

Thursday, May 8th, 2014

Exfoliation is your first step to a more healthy, beautiful and glowing complexion.  No matter what your skin type,

proper exfoliation will remove dead skin cells,  remove rough and uneven texture as well as allow treatments and

moisturizers to penetrate better.  Removing dead surface skin also helps stimulate the production of new, healthy

skin cells.   In this article I will advise on the best exfoliation system for your skin type and problems.  You will be

amazed at how quickly your skin will show substantial improvement.

Oily skin should be exfoliated daily with either a gentle scrub, such as our Almond Skin Polisher with Papaya Enzymes,

or an Exfolia Cleaning Cloth, which can be used with a cleanser such as Thorough Cleansing Gel or Rosewater Cleanser.

Pat skin dry and follow with toner.  If foundation is worn, it should be mineral based and removed thoroughly at the end

of the day.  Moisturizer,  if needed, should be water based and light, such as Red Tea Serum.

Dry, aged and photo-damaged skin should be exfoliated at least twice a week.  A gentle Exfolia Cleaning Cloth can also be

used nightly with your cleanser.  After cleansing and before moisturizing, a serum should be applied to aid in continuous

exfoliation, such as Peptide Serum or Glycolic Acid Serum 10%.  I am a fan of switching off on these serums every other

night.   Another one of my personal favorites for keeping aging skin glowing and fresh is our Vitamin C Peel once or twice

a week.  This can also be done in the morning before applying make-up and takes only 4-7 minutes, leaving your skin

looking like you had an expensive spa treatment.   Always follow exfoliation with a moisturizing treatment, such as

Peptox Wrinkle Relaxing Creme or Firm, Protect and Repair Cream.  Rejuvenating Creme and Collagen Creme are also

great options for very dry skin.

Normal skin should also be exfoliated on a regular basis to keep it in tip-top shape and allow protective products to

absorb more effectively.   Alpha-Beta Exfoliating Masque  is a great two-in-one product for gently exfoliating and also

drawing out excess T-zone impurities.  Follow with a Mineral Mist for light moisturizing while adding important minerals

and vitamins to the skin.  Always follow with a great SPF to protect the skin from future damage.

Spring Pinks for Everyone!

Friday, April 25th, 2014

Spring has sprung, and nothing says spring like pink!  There are so

many different variations and hues on this feminine color that everyone

can find a shade to complement their skin tone and eye color, whether

a bright, pure pink or a softer, coral blend.  Suit your taste and style with

a matte finish or a more fun and funky shimmer and glimmer.  The photo

at left demonstrates some of the many different shades.  Lipglosses from

top to bottom are Diamond Pink, Pop, Pink Extravaganza (fuschia), Dollhouse

and Cutie (touch of lavender).  Blushes at right are Hush Pink (matte mineral blush)

Spring Flirt (Coral/Pink Shimmer) and Nectar Baked Blush.  Lipglosses are $15-$16.50 and Blushes are $14-$14.50.

How to Pop Your Eyes With Make-Up

Tuesday, April 8th, 2014

One of the questions I am most frequently asked as a make-up artist and owner of  Cosmetic Cosmos, color cosmetics and  skincare, is “How can I pop my eyes?”  Another is, “My eyes are disappearing”, and still another is, “I have no idea what  colors to use to bring out my eyes.”

In the sketch above I have demonstrated how color can accentuate your eyes and which colors to use with your particular eye color.   In the top example, purples are used with blue eyes to bring out the blue.  A deeper, brighter purple eyeliner, Libido Waterproof Gel Eyeliner, is used closed to the iris and right in the lash line.  Lilac Whisper eyeliner is used above the deeper Libido on top lid and below Libido liner on bottom.  A crease-proof, instant dry shadow base is used in Cosmic, a sheer browny/purple, and then a quick dusting of Smashberry eyeshadow to finish the look.

The middle sketch depicts green eyes with Envy Me Waterproof Gel Eyeliner closest to the iris in the lashline and Limeburst Eyeliner above the Envy Me on the top lid and below on the bottom.  The lid has Stellar Liquid Eyeshadow Base in Khaki and then a dusting of Grassroots Eyeshadow to finish.

The bottom sketch shows a brown eye with Shiver Waterproof Gel Eyeliner closest to the iris in the lashline and Silveryblue Eyeliner above the Shiver on the top lid and below on the bottom.  Constellation, a golden/beige color shadow base and liquid shadow is used all over the lid and then a quick application of color from the Eyeshadow Kit in Blues.

Always finish with Vitamin E Enriched Lash Primer Followed By Lush Mascara for full, sweeping lashes.  The difference will be quite astounding.

Finding the Correct Primer for Your Skin
